Advantages & Disadvantages of Using a Different Type of Liquid Ring Compressor Systems

A liquid ring compressor system is also referred to as a vacuum pump. This is a pump with positive displacement and has the principle of working like a rotary vane vacuum pump.

This is usually referred to as the water ring vacuum pump that has improved technology and is developed by the most experienced and efficient engineers.

This has a difference from a rotary vane vacuum pump and it rotates a ring of liquid that forms a kind of a compression seal within the rotor. These particular pumps are well-designed for handling different gases, liquids, and water.

A vacuum pump system generally refers to an arrangement of a pump, pipes, fitting, and separator vessel. The liquid ring compressor pump has got several benefits due to its unique design and is also categorized into 3 major types that are listed below:

1. System of Once Through

In this particular system, the specific sealing liquid usually enters the system pump only a single time. The pump’s discharged fluid gets directed to a specific separator vessel.

There the discharged fluid and the gas gets separated and the liquid is drained off. The system of once-through is absolutely easy to operate and is a very simple system where no recovery or recirculation of the particular sealing liquid usually occurs.

Advantages:

  • There is no high cost of installation initially.
  • This is perfectly suitable for the lesser important service projects.

Disadvantages:

  • This consumes a high seal liquid with high effluent treatment set.

2. System of Partial Recirculation

In this particular system, the working of it is very similar to the system of once-through. Moreover, the only difference is the usage of the separator tank.

In this particular system, a particular part of the sealing liquid is then re-circulated with the help of added makeup water in a separator tank.

Depending on the overall quantity of the makeup water added, also an equal amount of the discharged liquid would be drained as a waste.

A fresh sealing liquid is then introduced to the specific pump for maintaining the proper temperature for attaining good performance. The maintenance of temperature then minimizes the overall cavitation chances. This facilitates in maintaining the pump better.

Advantages:

  • One does not need to incur a very high cost of installation initially.
  • Only a little amount of sealing liquid is re-circulated. Thus, this consumes a very less amount of sealing liquid.

Disadvantages:

  • One needs to use water for the purpose of cooling.

3. System of Total Recirculation

In this type of liquid ring compressor system, the used sealing liquid is completely re-circulated in this particular system. The heat that is discharged is then removed using a heat exchanger.

The used sealing fluid is then reintroduced into the pump. The seal liquid level in the separator should slightly be below the centerline of the shaft of the pump.

Also, a provision must be created for the overflow at a high level. This would prevent the pump’s motor from being overloaded and ultimately damaged. A circulation pump is required when there is a drop in the high pressure within the system.

Advantages:

  • The liquid ring vacuum pump is well-designed for high vapor and gas services.
  • This consumes a very less amount of sealing liquid.
  • This is suitable for landlocked dairies.

Disadvantages:

  • This involves very high initial as well as maintenance costs.

Conclusion

All of the above-discussed types of liquid ring compressor system pumps are the perfect machines to be used in humid, dirty, dusty & harsh environments that usually persist in industrial environments.

These particular pumps do have a straightforward and robust design for delivering various industrial processes like mining, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemicals manufacturing, etc.
