The meaning of “Kedar” is “Lord Shiva,” and  “Kantha” means part of the throat. So everyone can feel the blessings of Lord Shiva here. This trek is especially known for winter trekking, where powder-soft snow will welcome you. This place is seated at 12500 ft elevation.

The Kedarkantha trek is one of the ideal treks for hikers and nature lovers. This trek is situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Some believe that this trek has mythological importance also and has a connection with “Mahabharata.”

Actually, the route of the trek goes through the Govind Ballabh Pant National Park, which is a natural reserve of endangered species like Snow Leopard, Brown Bear, Moschus, Western Tragopan, Golden Eagle & many more.

This trek is known for its snowy trails during the winter and in summers for its green beauty. If you are planning it during the winters, then go through it. It will give you a lifetime of memorable moments of trekking and camping.

How To Reach Kedarkantha Trek 

For trekking Kedarkantha first, you have to reach Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand. After that, from Dehradun, continue your journey to Sankri, which is 196 km away. Your actual trekking will start from Sankri base camp. Dehradun is well connected with all major cities of India as well as from Delhi.

By Air- Jolly Grant Airport is the main airport of Uttarakhand. Where it is strongly connected with Delhi, it will take 55-60 minutes of airtime to reach there, and Sankri is 10 hrs drive away from Dehradun.

By Train- Dehradun Railway Station is well connected with all major railway stations. So the train will also be a good option.

By Road- Dehradun is also well connected by road. However, if you are planning to go by road Delhi will be the best option.

Difficulty Level

Actually, difficulty depends upon the season. In winters, it is slightly difficult due to snow in comparison to summers where all views and routes are clear. So it can be said that this trek is special for snow-loving trekkers.

Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun – Sankri

It will take a 187 km drive to reach Sankri from Dehradun.After reaching Sankri, take some rest and enjoy the evening beauty of the small hamlet of Uttarakhand.

Day 2: Sankri – Juda Ka Talab

After breakfast, your trekking will start from Sankri to Juda ka Talab. During trekking, you will walk through from lush green Himalayan forest. It is believed that Juda ka Talab is made up of water droplets from the hairs of Lord Shiva.  

Day 3: Juda ka Talab – Kedarkantha Base

The kedarkantha Base is situated at 11250 ft. it will take 3-4 hrs trekking to reach. After reaching there enjoy the scenic beauty and at night have fun at campsite.

Day 4: Kedarkantha Base – Kedarkantha Peak, followed by a trek to Hargaon

The peak is located at 12500 ft height. The route will go through from the forest of Oak trees, Pinewood. After the fatigue of the trek, the reward is waiting for you. The breathtaking view of the Himalayas will amaze you like nothing is more valuable than that. After enjoying at the top descend towards Hargaon camp.

Day 5: Hargaon – Sankri

In the morning enjoy the amazing view of the sunrise with magnificent Himalayan peaks. After breakfast descends towards Sankri.After reaching there enjoy your day by interacting with locals and know about their culture.

Day 6: Sankri- Dehradun  

After breakfast pack your bags and head back to Dehradun with your colossal moments.

Some Tips Before Going On Trekking

The length of kedarkantha trek is not large however during your visit daily you have to walk near around 4-6 km. The thing you should keep in your mind is that trekking in the mountains requires your endurance and strength. So before going on trekking first physically fit yourself by doing exercises and some yoga breathing techniques 2-3 months ago. It will save you from any kind of fatigue.
