What Is The Reason Behind Teeth Sensitivity?

Sensitivity has become a common problem for many of us now. “Dentine hypersensitivity” is the medical term for sensitivity.

We usually face this problem when we eat something cold, hot, acidic, or sweet. This dental pain is sharp and is generally of short duration.

To understand ‘Sensitivity’ deeply, we must look at the structure of the tooth:

A layer of dentine is situated directly below the outer non-sensitive layer of enamel. The layer of dentine is quite porous, and it directly links the pulp of the tooth through small tubules.

In a usual condition, the dentine is guarded by the gum and enamel but, when it gets exposed, it transmits chemical or thermal stimuli to the pulp. Then the exposed pulps respond to hot, cold, sweet, and spicy foods that trigger pain.

Why does this dentine get exposed in the first place?

Let us now look at some factors that contribute to teeth sensitivity:

1. Gum disease

It is the infection of the tissues that keep your teeth in order. Inadequate brushing and flossing habits are the usual causes of gum disease.

Receding gums are one of the prime reasons for teeth sensitivity. You can prevent gum disease by keeping good oral hygiene at home and going on your regular dental hygiene check-ups

2. Tooth enamel erosion

Tooth enamel is the hard, outer layer of teeth. It provides teeth with their structure. Tooth erosion usually occurs when an excess of acid takes away the tooth enamel. With time, the layer of enamel becomes very thin, which then exposes dentine.

If you want to prevent tooth erosion, then you should avoid eating acidic food items. Sometimes, the acid in your stomach causes tooth erosion. People suffering from problems such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease are at the risk of getting tooth erosion.

3. Overzealous tooth brushing

If you brush your teeth overzealously, then the tooth enamel wears away which will cause gum recession. It typically appears first on the sides of the teeth on the gum line.

To prevent this, you must remember to brush your teeth gently and thoroughly. An electric toothbrush might be beneficial for you because it prevents you from using too much force.

4. Teeth Grinding

Teeth Grinding is also named as bruxism. This condition happens when you excessively grind or clench your teeth.

Usually, grinding and clenching of teeth occur when you are sleeping, but some people grind and clench their teeth during the day also.  In this condition, your jaw muscles produce a large amount of force, which is fixed for a lengthy period of time on your teeth.

This way, the tooth structure gradually becomes thinner. Cracking and chipping of the teeth might also appear, which eventually causes sensitivity. When these cracks and chips are exposed for a longer time, bacteria might get into the tooth and causes more serious problems.

So what can be done to prevent sensitivity?

Now that you are aware of the causes of the sensitivity, you should try and take preventive measures to eliminate it like:

  • Using a particular desensitizing toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Avoiding acidic foods and drinks.
  • Brushing and flossing teeth twice a day.
